Art & Scripture painting #23: Psalm 1:1-3

Art & Scripture

1Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
3That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.
Psalm 1:1-3

This is one of my favourite Psalms in the Bible so it was fitting to paint it to mark my return after a long break from my brushes! When I painted this tree I didn’t put any fruits on it. I was meditating on the portion that says “fruit in season”. I didn’t think my recovery season was fruitful at all. However, there’s a time for everything and even in that, there’s a purpose… Even if I didn’t have any visible fruits to show during those long weeks, it was a season of growth and connection in our family. It wasn’t easy but I’m still thankful for that.
Have a wonderful week!

This is one of my favorite passages. It reminds me of my younger brother who passed away at age 44. My sisters and brothers (we used to sing as a group at church) were singing the hymn that included those words at church one Sunday morning and Gord (about age 7) decided he would lean against the pulpit with one hand and cross his legs. It was if he was saying, ‘yes we can be like that tree, unmoveable, fruitful and strong. The picture of him standing there reinforced the scripture so well. Thanks for this painting .
