Art & Scripture painting #43: 2 Timothy 2:1

Art & Scripture

You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
 Timothy 2:1

Paul wrote this letter to young Timothy to encourage him in his ministry in Ephesus. Paul loved Timothy as a son and they had spent many years preaching the gospel together during his missionary trips. He was imprisoned in Rome at that time and he knew his time on this earth was coming to an end (2 Tim. 4:6-7). Still, Paul wrote to Timothy not to complain but to show him another aspect of God’s grace that I hadn’t paid much attention to. God’s grace can strengthen us.

God’s grace is undeserved favour. It’s unexpected, extravagant, all-powerful and incredibly generous. It saves us and loves us first. It’s more than what I can comprehend. But reading this short passage also brings this grace to a new level. In Christ, by his grace, we can be strengthened to persevere, to fight the good fight, to remain faithful, to try again, to keep loving, and to keep our faith. It’s not in us, it’s from Him. It’s one more of his gifts to us, like a lilac tree blossoming in spring.

May this short verse encourage you too and may you be strengthened in the grace that is available to you through Christ Jesus. He sees us and our work is not in vain.
